Pierre will host powerful Sioux Falls Washington at Trautner-Hollister Field on Friday. At the same time, the Stanley County Buffs will be entertaining Chamberlain at Ole Williamson Field. Both games start at 7 p.m.
The homecoming athletics kick off on Thursday as the resurgent Lady Govs volleyball team will host district rival Huron at 7 p.m. After losing three straight, Pierre has rebounded to win their last three to improve to 5-3 on the year. The Tigers are winless in five games.

On the next night in football, Pierre will be trying to break a three-game losing streak against one of the top Class 11AA teams in the state. Sioux Falls Washington is 3-1 on the season and ranked No. 3 in this week’s sportswriters’ poll. The Warriors are averaging 37 points a game, including a 66-7 beat down of Rapid City Central last week. Pierre failed to score a touchdown for the second straight game in last week’s 14-6 loss to Huron, the Tigers first win in five years.
Stanley County coach Tom Rogers was homecoming king at Chamberlain back in the day and he is hoping his team adds to his memories on Friday. The Buffs are 1-2 on the season. Chamberlain has struggled in three losses, getting outscored 138-6.
The Lady Buffs are 6-10 after losing a four-set match to Big Dakota champion Miller on Tuesday. Stanley County is at Gettysburg tonight. Miller is the only team able to get the better of the Lady Battlers, who are 9-1 on the season.
The Pierre golf team will try and recover from its worst outing of the year, a 354 at the Watertown Invitational on Monday. Miles Schock was the only Gov individual who placed in the top 15, shooting an 82. The Govs will be trying for their first ESD championship on Saturday in Brookings. Schock and Curry Kuehl should be contenders to become the first Pierre individual conference champion since Jason Young in 1987. Kuehl lost a two-hole playoff for the title two years ago.
The Buff golfers are back at Wild Oaks Golf Course in Mitchell Monday for the Region 3A meet.
Cross-country star Alec Espeland will be going for another championship Friday at the Rapid City Invitational. Bridget Simmons and Jamie Chalcraft both finished in the top 10 in last week’s race in Huron. The Buffs and Lady Buffs are in Platte for a meet on Saturday.
The Pierre tennis team hosts their final home meets Saturday with a quadrangular against Huron, Madison and Rapid City Stevens. The action begins at 9 a.m. at the Griffin Park courts.
The Pierre boys and girls soccer teams are also hosting their final home games of the season. They both entertain Spearfish on Saturday. After beating Yankton last week, the Govs are third in the standings with a record of 6-2-1. The Lady Govs are 5-3-2 and in sixth place. The girls’ 27 goals rank at third-most in the state.The Spearfish boys are seventh place at 2-4-1 while the girls are 2-5-1 and 11th.
The girls game starts at 1 p.m. followed by the boys at 3 p.m. Both will be played at Hilger’s Gulch.
