The Lady Govs, who were seeded No. 6 going into the weekend’s contest, defeated Yankton, 6-5, Thursday during the opening round of play, then with goals from Avery Askew and Yutzil Rodriguez, they knocked off No. 2 Rapid City Stevens, 2-1, Friday in the semis.

But in the championship round, the Lady Govs ran into Sioux Falls O’Gorman, a team that, like them had a decent — but not stellar — win-loss record going in and then caused its share of upsets during the three-day tournament. And another upset was just not in the cards for the Lady Govs.
After early first-half scores from the Lady Govs’ Linsey Peterson and O’Gorman’s Alyssa Brazil, the two teams remained locked at a 1-1 tie in what seemed like it would last forever, as neither team gave the other much opportunities and defense reigned supreme.
For the first 25 minutes of the second half until on a corner kick, O’Gorman’s Sheila Grogan curved the ball past Pierre goalie Kristi Hestdalen and into the net, it seemed like Pierre and O’Gorman could do no more than keep the ball in the middle of the field.
Just like that, Grogan’s successful corner kick opened the floodgates for the Knights. After that, Grogan almost put in another kick from about 25 yards out, but the ball hit the cross bar. However, teammate Afton Keiser, was there to finish the job, giving O’Gorman a 3-1 lead. Brazil then scored her second goal of the game on an assist by Grogan to give the fourth-seeded Knights the title for the second straight year.
"I can’t express just how proud I am of these girls," Pierre head coach Sidney Zanin said. "We made history for Pierre."
This was the Lady Govs’ first-ever second-place finish at the state tournament.
"I think the seed has been planted," Zanin said.
"We worked so hard to get here and I think we’ll begin to demand a big respect from other teams in the state in future years."
