“We were here all three days. We loved the weekend,” Gregg said. “The kids got to try out the kayaks. And we loved the motocross. That was the kids’ favorite part.”
Gregg and her family were among almost 20,000 people to attend Oahe Days, according to organizers. That’s an increase of approximately 30 percent over last year.

“I think Oahe Days is becoming a bigger and bigger event,” said Oahe Days chair Scott Olson. “We’re looking at increasing it every year, refining it and making it a bigger and bigger success.”
The event also helped impact the local community. Both vendors at Oahe Days and local businesses saw an increase in traffic this weekend.
“It’s been quite a bit busier,” said Mike Row, assistant manager at DJ’s Clark convenience store. “There’s been more boats and traffic and people coming up from the park.”
Melody Beierle, desk clerk at the Days Inn, said her hotel was packed.
“We were full,” Beierle said. “We were very busy all weekend.”
Frank Denton is a Pierre native who set up a vendor tent for his Great Dakota Bowl Company at Oahe Days. He said he sold almost 30 pieces of shaped wooden bowls — or 10 percent of what he’ll sell in typical year.
“For me it’s been good,” Denton said. “This is my home town. A lot of the locals know me and they collect my stuff.”
The impact on many local residents was the opportunity to have fun doing events which rarely come to Pierre. Evelyn Putzier went to Oahe Days with her family and said the children with her loved the motocross stunt riders.
“We came down for the motocross, and that was excellent,” Putzier said. “The kids really enjoyed that.”
One new event this year was a golf contest where people could try to chip golf balls into an offshore boat. Winners got to fire off a black powder rifle, and proceeds will benefit the South Dakota Discovery Center & Aquarium. Kristie Maher, executive director of the Discovery Center, said the golf event was a big success.
“It’s been really popular,” said Maher. “We were really swamped for a while. People have been having fun — and coming back.”
Maher said more than 30 people managed to hit a golf ball into the boat. The event raised about $1,000 for the Discovery Center.
“We’ve had 3-year-olds all the way up to way past that having fun doing this,” Maher said.
Gregg said her family wishes Oahe Days wasn’t just once a year.
“I think this is absolutely one of the best ways to spend a weekend,” Gregg said. “It’s a gorgeous weekend, and so many activities for everybody.”
