PIERRE — The city commission approved plans for an addition to the River Cities Transit building Tuesday. The work is expected to begin in the fall and provide 26,000 additional square feet to house all transit vehicles and more area for personnel. $1.7 million for the project comes from a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 and will be used to contract the work. The city will contribute approximately $100,000 worth of investment in city property and possible city labor to match the grant amount.

PIERRE — An AGE Corp. employee suffered serious but non-fatal injuries Tuesday morning after the road grader he was operating in Sully County slid down a hill and fell 80 feet into a ravine before rolling and ejecting the man, according to Lt. Curt Hasart with Pierre Rescue. Curt Olson, with the Sully County Sheriff’s Department, identified the man as 78 year-old Gerald Johnson.

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tim Johnson D-S.D. announced today that Fort Pierre will receive a $1,875,000 grant from the Economic Development Administration. The funding will be used to construct a storm water drainage system from the Fort Pierre Recreational Trail to the Missouri River, which was damaged from floods in 2008. In addition to protecting local businesses from future flooding, the project will create as many as 15 jobs and retain as many as 63 jobs.
