FORT PIERRE — The annual Fourth of July Rodeo in Fort Pierre is back again this year.

The professional rodeo event will bring several hundred cowboys to town for the two-day competition.

The rodeo has been a fixture on Independence Day since at least 1948, according to Pat Sutley of the Fort Pierre Chamber of Commerce.

The festivities kick off today with a slack session at 10 a.m. and the first evening session is set to start at 7 p.m.

The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and is followed by a 1 p.m. rodeo performance.

The night session on Saturday is set to start at 7 p.m. with fireworks to follow as close to 10 p.m. as sunset and circumstances allow.

The performances will feature a full slate of events, including saddle bronc riding, bareback riding, calf roping, bull riding and barrel racing.

Plenty of top cowboys from South Dakota and around the country should be on hand.

"We always seem to have great participation," Sutley said. "It should be a good time, so we encourage people to come on out."
