Heidepriem plans 2010 announcement soon

By David Montgomery

I just caught Sen. Scott Heidepriem (a name I *always* have to check to make sure I've spelled it right), D-Sioux Falls, by phone from Colorado, where he's taking depositions today. Heidepriem, the Senate Minority Leader and former Republican who has been widely mentioned as an aspiring 2010 gubernatorial candidate, had praise for Rep. Stephanie Herseth Sandlin after her announcement yesterday that she would pursue reelection.

"I know it was a tough decision for her to make, but I applaud her for what she's decided," Heidepriem said. "She will continue to work hard for South Dakota in the House of Representatives where she's shown such great leadership."

Heidepriem said he hasn't had a chance to talk with allies and advisors since Herseth Sandlin's announcement, having been out of state. But he said once he gets back in state, he'll make his 2010 plans clear.

"I'll have an announcement very soon," Heidepriem said.

It's expected Heidepriem will formally jump into the now-open gubernatorial race; while an uphill climb for a Democrat, it's almost certainly an easier race than challenging Sen. John Thune would be.
