FARGO, N.D. — The championship game got played a little early at the Fargo hockey tournament over the weekend.

The Pierre Capitals and the TC Wessy’s Boys out of St. Paul hooked up in the dreaded early morning game. But die-hard rink rats were rewarded with a doozy of a game.

The teams battled back and forth to a four-all tie at the end of regulation.

“It really was a great game. We scored one, they came back. We scored two, they came back,” Pierre coach Rob Kittay said. “We played a four-on-four overtime, and we were still tied. And then we went to a three-man shootout, and they were able to get a penalty shot.”

After falling by an official score of 5-4 in the shootout, the Caps rebounded to win their next two game to win the consolation trophy.

Pierre stopped Langdon, N.D., 5-0 and then trounced Mayport, 9-0.

“Against Langdon, we played pretty well. It was a fast game,” Kittay said. “Against Mayport, we just outmanned them a little bit, but we had the guys working on some things we need to improve before our next games.

“The scoring was pretty well spread around, and we played pretty good defense in giving up five goals over three games,” he said.

Pierre’s next seven games all figure to be against quality opponents, and include important league games.

The Caps are on the road next weekend when they play at Brookings on Saturday night and at Watertown on Sunday morning. Brookings and Watertown are each 3-2 in SDAHA play and have split a pair of games with each other.

Pierre then travels to Minneapolis for a tournament before returning for its first home league action against Brookings on Jan. 2-3.

“The next seven games are going to be tough,” Kittay said. “With Brookings and Watertown splitting, and us at 3-0, we have an opportunity to put ourselves in a good position.”

The Capitals, who played a few men down due to ACT testing over the weekend, figure to be back to full strength for the league games this weekend.

" My kids play hockey. They have teammates from Pierre and Ft. Pierre. They are the Oahe Capitals and proud of it. True, most of the players are from Pierre, but then most of the population is in PIerre. There are also quite a few players who live in Ft. Pierre, but go to school in PIerre & vis a vis, so it is very inclusive of both towns. This is one organization which really doesn't see a division based on where you live. These people work and play together regardless of schools or towns. Attitudes are checked at the door. "

" Well, according to that, they're the "Oahe Capital's" which I'm pretty sure isn't correct.

Either way, nice weekend for the Caps. "

" For what it's worth the team isn't the Pierre Capitals - they are the Oahe Capitals. Young men & women from both Pierre and Ft. Pierre play on Capitals teams.

    Go Caps! "
