At halftime the first two All-staters in team history, Tina Stroup-Bruske and Kristie Hallack-Moore were inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame. But after the ceremonies, the current Lady Buffs were buried under a mountain of turnovers and missed shots. They trailed by eight, 41-33 with 4:53 left in the third quarter.
The next field goal would not come until Tara Russell sank a long three at the final buzzer. In between, Cheyenne-Eagle Butte would outscore Stanley County 32-1, including 23-4 in the fourth quarter. The Lady Buffs ended up with 32 turnovers and are averaging almost 25 a game.

“We may end up with a state record in turnovers if we don’t already have it,” said coach Byron Hand. “There’s no consistency. The turnovers come from decision making. It’s pretty hard to fix during the season.”
When Stanley County was able to complete a play, they found it difficult to finish it. They made only three baskets in the first half as they trailed by 14 at the break. They began to creep back into the game. A basket by Kendra Karst was followed by two free throws by Brandi Prince to get the margin under double figures before things collapsed.
Karst led the team with 12 points, her second straight game in double figures. She also lead with seven rebounds. Lacy Leaf had 19 points and seven rebounds for the Braves.
Cheyenne-Eagle Butte lost to Sully Buttes 47-42 on Friday, its first action since Jan. 16. The 73 points scored were the most by a Stanley County girls opponent since Sully Buttes racked up 83 in the 2005-06 opener.
It will be a busy week for the Lady Buffs, now 4-8. Tuesday they play at Todd County in a doubleheader with the boys, the first of six straight road games. They participate in another doubleheader on Thursday at Lyman. They will be in White River on Saturday to finish up the delayed Southern Plains tournament.
“This is the time of the year where you are tested and we will be,” said Hand.
