FORT PIERRE — The Stanley County boys basketball team got the defensive effort they sought but the offense was not able to keep pace in a 45-36 loss at home to Cheyenne-Eagle Butte on Saturday.

The 45 points surrendered was almost 16 under the team’s season per game average of 60.9. But the offense was plagued again by too many turnovers (31) to get into the offensive flow. Jake Miller scored 21 points but the rest of the team combined for just 15.

“We knew we could play with this team and we did play with them for the most part,” said coach Buddy Seiner. “We had way too many turnovers and never really ran our offense.”

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte was coming off a tough week in which they were unable to attend school due to the after effects of last weekend’s ice and snow storm. They lost 59-47 to Winner on Friday, their first game since Jan. 16. The rust was evident in the first quarter. Miller scored three straight baskets to close out the initial frame to give the Buffs a 10-6 early lead. The Braves made only 3-of-17 from the field in the first eight minutes.

But Stanley County would make only one basket in the second quarter as Cheyenne-Eagle Butte surged ahead. Two free throws by Parker Ducheneaux with just under two minutes to go until the half gave the Braves the lead at 14-13.

The Buffs scored the first eight points of the second half for a 21-18 lead but were outscored 11-0 in the last 3:32 of the third to trail by eight going into the fourth quarter. Stanley County would close the gap to four points with just under five minutes to play at 31-27. But they missed the front end of bonus free throws on consecutive possessions to help fuel a 9-1 Braves run that put the game away.

Cheyenne-Eagle Butte shot only 29.6 percent from the field and did not have a player in double figure scoring. However, they went 12-of-16 from the free throw line, compared to 5-of-12 for Stanley County. The Braves are 4-9 while Stanley County falls to 2-11.

The Buffs have two road games this week, going to Mission on Tuesday to play Todd County and then to Presho for a rematch with Lyman.

“We know the things we have to work on,” said Seiner. ‘We’ll be looking towards the positive.”
