The Caps ended up splitting four games, defeating Fargo and Huron while falling to Duluth, Minn., and Rugby, N.D.
The loss to Rugby put the Capitals in the third-place game on Sunday — against league foe Huron.

“Drive all the way up there to play Huron,” Pierre coach Rob Kittay said. “But that’s how it works out some times.”
The Capitals downed the All-Stars 8-3, behind a hat trick from Stephen Bollinger, a pair of goals from Ryan Lauseng, and single tallies from Josh Rogers, Brian Long and John Burchill.
The Caps also opened the tournament with a win, beating Fargo 4-0.
Lauseng scored a pair of goals, and Max Hanson and Rogers had one each for the Capitals.
The Caps then ran into a tough Duluth team and lost, 3-1. Pierre managed to tie the game at 1 in the third period, but Duluth got the go-ahead goal less than a minute later and added another.
Bollinger scored the lone goal for the Capitals.
Against Rugby, the Capitals found themselves in the penalty box for nearly seven consecutive minutes of game time, which proved to be too much kill time as they fell 4-2 with an empty net goal.
Bollinger and Joe Wieseler scored for the Caps.
The 1-2 record in pool play matched up the Capitals against Huron, and the Caps easily dispatched them to take third place. Pierre won the tournament each of the previous two years.
While the Caps were playing outside the state, the Rushmore Thunder made a big move toward securing a place in the top half of the league standings, sweeping three games at Mitchell over the weekend.
The Capitals need to follow suit, as they host the Marlins for a pair of games over the weekend.
Pierre’s 18 points are still good for second place in the league, with Watertown third, Rushmore fourth and Mitchell out of the top half in fifth.
