PIERRE — The Pierre Capitals return to league play at home to highlight a busy sports weekend.

The Caps, fresh off a third-place finish at a tournament in Grand Forks, play host to the Mitchell Marlins for a game Saturday night and another Sunday afternoon.

Currently in second place in the SDAHA league standings, the Capitals (9-4 SDAHA) play only teams below them in the standings for the remainder of the season.

In short, they need to take care of business from her on out and get some help to have a shot at a league title.

Mitchell is coming off a disappointing weekend that saw them drop three games at home to Rapid City. The Caps beat the Thunder two out of three games in Rapid City earlier this season.

Capitals linemates Andy Zarecky and Josh Rogers are tied for fifth in the league scoring race, with 20 points each in 13 games. Coby Larson continues to lead with 25 points in 12 contests, and average of better than 2 points per game.

The Capitals and Marlins (6-7) are set to drop the puck at 6 p.m. on Saturday night at the Oahe Expo Center in Fort Pierre. The rematch is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday.

The basketball calendar is full as well, with all four area teams seeing action.

The Stanley County girls, after falling to 4-9 on the season on a buzzer-beater at Todd County on Tuesday night, continue a six-game road trip on Friday at Lyman (7-5). The Stanley County boys (1-11) are the second half of the doubleheader.

The Lady Buffs then travel to White River to makeup the final game of the Southern Plains Tournament on Saturday. Stanley Country plays powerhouse South Central (13-2) in the third place game, with tipoff set for 4 p.m. in White River.

The Pierre basketball teams play opposite schedules over the weekend, with the Governors taking their turn at home.

The snakebitten Govs look to get back in the win column Friday night at Riggs Gym when the Brookings Bobcats (5-8) come to town. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Bobcats look a bit like the Governors, in that they have been playing better than their record suggests. In their last five games, the Bobcats lost a one-point game to Brandon Valley and then turned around and thumped the Lynx by 20. Brookings then beat Rapid City Stevens soundly before dropping another tight game to Rapid City Central (79-72) and close one to Sioux Falls O’Gorman (64-60).

Pierre (2-9) then entertains Sioux Falls Washington (6-3) on Saturday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The Warriors have won three in a row heading into a Friday night showdown with Sioux City East.

The Lady Govs, fresh of a pair of home wins last weekend, can get back above .500 with a pair of road wins this weekend. Pierre (6-7) is at Brookings (2-10) on Friday night and at Washington (6-3) on Saturday.

The Lady Govs gymnastics team begins its postseason run this weekend with the ESD meet at Yankton on Saturday. Events are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

Also Saturday, the Stanley County wrestlers host the Big Dakota conference meet at Parkview Gym. Wrestlers are set to take the mats at 10 a.m.
