Ex-Board of Regents executive director and Fort Pierre resident Tad Perry is planning to run for the state House of Representatives in District 24 as a Republican.

Perry was director of the Board of Regents for 14 years before retiring this year.

Incumbent representatives Tim Rounds and Ryan Olson are both term limited and cannot run for reelection.

Perry said he believes his background on the board makes him a good choice for representative.

"I'm familiar with the type of issues the district has," Perry said. "I've worked in education and worked around state government for the last 15 years. I have a pretty good background being an advocate for the issues I've worked on and I think I can be an effective advocate for the citizens of this district."

District 24's senator, Bob Gray, is eligible to run for one more term in the senate.

" I don't know if Republicans or Democrats plan an opponent for Mr. Perry. If so, I hope that announcement comes soon. There a lot of folks who would work for the election of someone other that Mr. Perry. "

" I'm having trouble seeing a district 24 representative with the best interests of Brown, Brookings, Clay, Lawrence, Lake and Pennington counties at heart. "

" @sparky: After I published this my call to the Secretary of State's office was returned. They don't actually accept filings for the 2010 elections until Jan 1. I'm not sure whether Perry actually brought in papers to them or not but it's not quite official yet. I've updated the post to remove the inaccuracy. "
