Primary cash and general election cash

In my last post, I said I'd revisit the issue of funds raised for the primary election versus the general election. Then I didn't. Whoops.
Anyway, just a quick note on that: Congressional candidate Rep. Blake Curd's fundraising totals, and perhaps others, include both funds for the primary election and the general election. But it's not quite so simple as adding the two together, which is what the reporting has been so far.
Candidates can only use primary election funds through the actual primary election. If they win the primary, then having general election funds already in the bank is an advantage, and part of a candidate's selling point — "I've got a head start on beating the other party's candidate."
But if they don't win the primary, they have to return the general election money. That means that when Curd raises $180,000, he's actually got somewhat less than that to use against Secretary of State Chris Nelson. How much less, I don't know yet but hope to soon. But it's worth keeping score of primary and general election fundraising separately.
