A semitrailer tried to squeeze underneath the Pierre Street railroad bridge Thursday, crashing and getting stuck in the process.

At about 6:46 a.m., Pierre police responded to the crash. The driver of the vehicle was Lowell D. Wiggins, 60, of Halstead, Kan. He was driving a tractortrailer owned by a trucking company out of Salina, Kan.

The tractor had about $4,000 damage and the trailer was completely destroyed, according to a news release from the Pierre Police Department. The value of the trailer was estimated at $30,000.

A towing truck out of Chamberlain had to be called to the scene to remove the semitrailer. Police cited Wiggins for a truck route violation.

It isn’t the first time trucks have jammed under the railroad bridge, as pedestrians near the bridge noted Thursday morning.

“Bridge wins again,” one Pierre resident who was walking by the site said.

There was no damage to the railroad bridge.
