As far as Henry McDonald knows, his unusually fine home is being built in an end-of-the-line railroad town, not the future capital of a state that hasn’t even been formed.

The time is 1885 and McDonald is trying to get the jump on westward expansion when he moves to a developing area in the south central part of Dakota Territory. There, as president of the Traders Bank of East Pierre, he starts building his 2,800-square-foot home.
