Joe Riis grew up outside. During his childhood in Pierre, he developed a strong relationship with the land and wildlife on the plains and often enjoyed hunting with his parents.

Riis still enjoys hunting for sustenance today and currently lives in a log cabin that he built in Bijou Hills. But perhaps his most distinguished accomplishment since leaving Pierre has been becoming a wildlife and conservation photographer for National Geographic.
