A suspected impaired driver struck a semitrailer with his SUV before hitting a city transformer box Thursday, according to the Stanley County Sheriff’s Office.
Chief Deputy Greg Swanson said the SUV and semitrailer were both heading south on State Highway 83 in Fort Pierre when the SUV struck the semitrailer on the front driver’s side.
Swanson said the SUV was knocked toward oncoming traffic, and appears to have overcorrected, going off the right side of the road. The SUV then spun around and hit a city transformer box before coming to a rest on Seventh Avenue, he said.
The crash caused electricity to go down in the area, with at least one local business losing power for roughly 20 minutes.
Swanson said the SUV was totaled while the semitrailer received light damages. The semitrailer driver was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital and later released. The SUV driver was unharmed, but was arrested by the South Dakota State Patrol on suspicion of driving while impaired, he said.
The sheriff’s office is not releasing the names of those involved in the crash at this time.
