Irene Caldwell remembers a South Dakota that many people never knew. When she was young, the most convenient way to travel from Fort Pierre to Pierre was by ferry.
“Coming to Pierre was like going to Chicago,” Caldwell said. “We’d get ready for weeks to come here. I remember my first ferry ride; my mother told me that I had a ring and I threw it in the river!”
