Re-inventing an ancient art

Stan Wahl of Stan Wahl Pottery of Pierre uses different colors of clay to paint designs on his pottery. The clay turns different colors when the pots are fired. The beautiful black and brown color of the pots is created by adding horse manure to the coals as pots are being fired. That creates smoke that gives them the black hue. Wahl exhibited some of his designs inspired by Arikara pottery at a recent gun show in Pierre. His pots sell for as little as $25 and as much as $300. He has made nearly 3,000 pots so far after starting Stan Wahl Pottery at about the time he retired from a career as a teacher. (Photos by Lance Nixon/Capital Journal)
