State veterinarian Dustin Oedekoven said Thursday the actual confirmed death toll of cattle killed in this past weekend’s snowstorm in western South Dakota is about 2,000 animals so far, but he estimated the final count could be five to 10 times that number.
“Everybody wants to know the number, but truthfully we don’t know. We won’t know for some time,” Oedekoven said. “Based on what we can assess, I’m estimating it will be 10,000 to 20,000 head.”
