TubaChristmas comes to Pierre on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the State Capitol Building as part of the festival of trees.

Directors are Pierre music teachers and Julie Van Gorp, Mitchell Middle School band director.

TubaChristmas began in New York City in 1974 as a tribute to the late artist and teacher William J. Bell, born on Christmas Day, 1902.

Lelia Guilbert of Mitchell played her first TubaChristmas in 1975 with 300 tuba players at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles.

She has played TubaChristmas since 1995 in Huron and Sioux Falls, as well as in Spencer, Iowa, and Antioch, Ill., and Chicago. She has coordinated TubaChristmas in Mitchell the past six years and will be coordinating the first TubaChristmas at the Capitol in Pierre.
