With this first major snowfall of the season, Hughes County warns its residents to be prepared for winter storms. The County Highway Department generally does not plow county roads until the blowing and drifting have reduced to an acceptable level. Roads are not plowed during those conditions because it is ineffective and presents a danger both to the public and the plow operators. That means those in the country might not be able to reach town whenever they want.

When a storm is predicted, residents should take steps to ensure they have sufficient medicine, food and supplies to last until the storm stops and the roads are cleared. If there is not a legitimate emergency and need to reach town, contact 911 dispatch and they will make the arrangements. If a resident needs to reach town on short notice, they might want to make other arrangements if bad weather is predicted. Country living comes with some inherent inconveniences, make sure to that in mind and make the necessary preparations in advance.
