A 16-year-old boy is dead after a shooting Tuesday in the 400 block of North Buchanan Avenue in Pierre.

At 5:28 p.m. law enforcement officers from the Pierre Police Department, Hughes County Sheriff's Office and the South Dakota Highway Patrol responded to a call of a shooting.

“Our initial investigation showed that there were three male juveniles involved,” a news release from the Pierre Police Department says. “They were acquainted with each other. One 16-year-old male received fatal injuries from a gunshot wound.”  

One 16-year-old male is detained while the investigation continues.

The case is being investigated by the Pierre Police Department and the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation.

“This was an isolated incident and there is no threat to the public,” the release says.

The one thing that is in my mind right after reading about this tragedy is; HOW DID A 16YEAR OLD GET POSSESSION OF A FIREARM FROM A LOCAL GUN SHOP? Is this legal without a parent or guardian present? I think this should be looked into. With the way our society is headed this was very bad judgement on the part of somebody.

I want to make it perfectly clear that I personally own firearms and do not believe gun control should happen, but the law is the law and they should not be bent by anyone, no mater how high up on the food chain.
