A great investment for the Derek Jeters of the future
Posted: October 08, 2014 - 12:18 am

On behalf of every kid who ever participated in baseball at Hyde Stadium in the last 100 years … on behalf of every one of us who can still close our eyes and see the halo of dust and cigar smoke suspended over the field on a still summer night at a Pierre Cowboys game … and still smell the peanuts and hotdogs that permeated the night air and eventually drew us to the concession window … on behalf of the many volunteers who kept the Legion Baseball program going through the difficult years and paid for out-of-town travel and equipment out of their pockets … and on behalf of every fan who ever walked into Hyde Stadium and looked around and thought, “What an unusually beautiful setting for a baseball stadium” – thank you to the City Commission and the Post 8 Legion Board for recognizing the importance of updating and restoring this great facility for all the little Derek Jeters of the future.

An open letter to Fort Pierre residents
Updated: September 24, 2014 - 12:09 am

I am writing in response to the editorial in Friday’s (Sept. 19) newspaper, as well as the letter to the editor written by Brian Doherty. And for good measure, we’ll talk about former Mayor Jim Hoffman’s comments which were quoted in Thursday’s paper!

Rounds should attend more debates
Updated: August 15, 2014 - 12:11 am

Why is Mike Rounds limiting the number of debates he is willing to attend? He isn’t governor anymore and, unless I am mistaken, he is a full time candidate.

Powertech problems
Posted: June 19, 2014 - 11:01 pm

It doesn’t take much digging into the Powertech Uranium Mine to see that it stinks to high heaven. Hiring two relatives of Governor Rounds to lobby him to weaken water protections. High paid lobbyists literally writing the law that bars the state from monitoring the mine. Throw on top the fact that Powertech is a foreign company with virtually no South Dakota investors who has never conducted a uranium mine before and we have a recipe for a disaster.

Stark contrasts in Senate race
Posted: June 19, 2014 - 11:00 pm

It seems to me that the primary election was a perfect example of this year’s Senate race. We have a Democrat in Rick Weiland who was out pounding the pavement and continuing his second trip to every town in South Dakota.

Pressler not as independent as he says
Posted: June 19, 2014 - 11:00 pm

Former Republican Senator Larry Pressler is running again for the Senate seat he lost in 1996 to Tim Johnson. While Mr. Pressler served from 1979-1997, the only part of his record he seems to talk about is turning down an obvious bribe 30 years ago. What he doesn’t talk about is the part of his record where, as the chairman of the Commerce Committee, he was responsible for the bill that gave billions to phone companies by allowing them to give consumers terrible service. The next time you have spotty reception calling outside of South Dakota, especially in the rural part of the state, you can thank Larry Pressler’s work on behalf of the phone companies. As senator, Mr. Pressler put corporations and campaign contributions ahead of consumers. He talks a good game about being independent now, but his record shows that, as a senator, he was anything but independent.
