Who should be the Texas private school (TAPPS) state player of the year for 2022-23? SBLive scoured the state and narrowed the list down to eight.
Here are the girls finalists for the 2022-23 season:
Maegan Riebel, Boerne Geneva, soph., PG
Twice this season she set new career-high in points with 34 and then added 41 a week later. Led her team to another district title and later a runner-up finish in Class 4A. Scored a team-high 18.9 points per game, while adding 3.2 assists and 3.7 steals per contest.
Emily Kate Jones, Dallas First Baptist, jr., F
Averaged a double-double this year with 24.6 points per game and 12.3 rebounds per game the Saints, who were 25-6. She surpassed the 1,500-point and 1,000-rebound mark this season for the district champions.
Kalysta Martin, San Antonio Providence Catholic, jr., G
Carried the offense for the Provets by scoring 24.7 points per game for a team that average a little less than 40. She also grabbed 14.6 rebounds per game. ‘Bird’ holds several Division I offers.
Britlee Wood, Arlington St. Paul’s Prep, sr., F
She was a double-double machine this year in 22 of the team’s 23 games. Wood finished the campaign with 22.7 points per game with 11.3 boards per game.
Yasmeen Schmidt, San Antonio Cornerstone, fresh., SG
The ninth grader was a scoring machine for the Warriors, tallying 20 points per game. Hit 40% of her shots from the field 81% from the free-throw line. Scored in double digits in 28 of 31 games this season.
Loghan Johnson, Houston Christian, sr., G
Helped Houston Christian win the 4A Southwest Prepatory Conference for the second year in a row with a 71-60 win over Houston Episcopal. The McDonld’s All-Amrican nominee was the TABC Large Private School Player of the Year in 2022. The Texas Tech signee scored 15.6 points per game.
Brooke Dial, Dallas Parish Episcopal, sr., SF/PG
Helped the Panthers reached the TAPPS 6A final four but lost to runner-up Bishop Lynch in the semifinals. Dial scored 17.6 points per game, adding 6.1 rebounds and 2.5 steals per contest. Scored her 1,000th point in January.
D’Asia Thomas, Houston Christian, sr., PF/SF
Another Mustang on the list, Thomas joined Johnson in helping the Mustangs win another state title. The Georgia Tech led her team in scoring with 15.9, a hair above of Johnson on a team that was 30-4. Has been all-state the past two years and could make it three when the teams are announced.
Ananda Jenerson, Fort Worth Southwest Christian, soph., PG/SG
In only 43 games of varsity basketball she eclipsed the 1,000-point mark. The averaged 25.1 points per game for the Eagles, hitting 37% of her shots from the field. Also led the team in rebounds (10.3), assists (2.4) and steals (4.1). Scored a season-high 52 against Burleson.
Makynna Robbins, Houston Lutheran South Academy, jr., F
The 5-foot-11 guard hit 45% of her shots from the field, finishing with a team-high 17.6 points per game. She was first for the Pioneers in rebounds (14.2) and steals (2.4) and was second in assists (2.3). Scored her 1,000th point on Jan. 31 and set a school record with 24 rebounds in a game in December.
