High School State Championship picnics hosted by governor

High School State Championship picnics hosted by governor

The T.F. Riggs High School soccer team was just one of the many teams, and individual students, who attended the championship picnics hosted by Governor Kristi Noem, May 20, June 4, or June 17. The T.F. Riggs High School Class 11AA Football also attended one of the picnics.

During the months of May and June, hundreds of South Dakota High School Activities Association State Champions were invited by Governor Kristi Noem to three championship picnics at the governor’s residence in Pierre.

Nearly 400 of the top academic and sports achievers from across the state visited, and received face-to-face recognition on their accomplishments from Noem. Many individuals and teams stayed overnight in Pierre, and many participated in capitol tours before heading home. For some of the students this was their first visit to the capital city, to the Capitol building, and to the governor’s Pierre residence.

“While inviting them to Pierre gives them the chance to learn more about our great state and see our capital city, it also gives us the opportunity to showcase some of our best and brightest,” said Noem. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to celebrate the successes of tomorrow’s leaders, encourage them to build their careers in South Dakota, and introduce them to the beauty of this community.”

At each event, on May 20, June 4, or June 17, students participated in a picnic spread sponsored by South Dakota Beef Industry Council, South Dakota Cattlemen’s Association, South Dakota Soybean Association, South Dakota Corngrowers, South Dakota Pork Producers, and South Dakota Wheat Growers. For weather, size, convenience, and other reasons, the food part of the picnics were held indoors, while snacks and physical activities such as cornhole toss were held outside.
