There's a great selection of photos in this week's Community Art, with three familiar names returning to share their images from around the Pierre, Fort Pierre and Lake Oahe areas.
Ralph Fischer submitted two photos capturing the peaceful scenes in Pierre.
In one, Fischer headed to north Pierre, where he found a great angle on a frosted tree to capture the sun peeking through the cold branches nicely. He said the scene was one of those "got to get it now" moments, so he circled back to capture it.
In his other image, Fischer found the moon lumbering over the hills. He had a good vantage point from a parking lot on Pierre's east side, where he said the scene was waiting for someone to capture it.
Fischer wasn't the only one abiding by the sky's wishes. Maria Jhing Hays found a painted sky overhead as a pastel sunrise splashed soft pinks, blues and purples across a wintery landscape on Jan. 10 off east Highway 34.
Hays also lucked out and caught a couple of hungry deer hitting their favorite drive-thru on Jan. 9 off Izaak Walton Road. She arrived just in time to catch one working its snout into the feeder's tray.
Matthew Edwards also lucked out on Jan. 4 at Oahe Dam, where he found plenty of birds for his lens.
He found two bald eagles perched in a tree while they took in the sunlight and relaxed for a moment. He also found one looking at the landscape while it flew over the Missouri River.
Edwards also crossed paths with a golden eagle perched on a tree. The big bird gave him a bit of the side-eye as it kept close tabs. Luckily, Edwards was still able to take a great image of it.
And from birds of prey to a goofy pheasant, Edwards captured them all. In his final image, he found a skedaddling pheasant making its way across the snow as its spindly legs gave it their all.
If you have photos to share with the community, send them to Editor Jorge Encinas at jencinas@capjournal.com. Include the who, what, where and when with your submissions, and the Capital Journal will publish them online and in Saturday's Dakota Life.
The Capital Journal also selects one image to feature in the weekly South Dakota Outdoors newsletter, published on Fridays. You can sign up for the newsletter at capjournal.com under the "Outdoors" tab and see who gets the next Featured Photo of the Week.
