The next free concert at the Steamboat amphitheater in southern Pierre is tomorrow, Wednesday, June 12, starting at 8 p.m.
Last week’s season opener in the annual Capital City Band series saw a nice sized crowd, according to band director Larry Johnson.
Johnson said that for this week the Elk’s Club will do a presentation on the American flag and its history. Also, the Senior Citizens Center will provide root beer floats, with donations going to the upkeep and improvement of the center. The concert’s theme, along with the history of ‘Ol’ Glory’, is “Cool Classics.”
“Wednesday looks to be a beautiful evening, so grab your lawn chair or blanket and enjoy an hour of the ‘Classics’,” Johnson said.
The music list — classical favorites that span the past three centuries — includes “You’re a Grand Old Flag” by George M. Cohan, “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel, “Overture on a Shaker Tune” by Aaron Copland, “Eine Kleine Nachtmusik” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” by Paul Dukas, “Carmina Burana” by Carl Orff, “Themes from ‘The Nutcracke’ “ by P.I. Tchaikovsky, “Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens, and the rousing “Overture 1812” by P.I. Tchaikovsky.
