On May 8, the Capital Journal put out a call for reader-submitted photos as part of a contest, and the top three winners are here.

Colby Buckles took first with a shot of the Missouri River in Pierre. Sam Kandi Gilkerson's photo of Arya fishing with James Gilkerson came in second place. And Shane Bland's sunrise over the Rapid City, Pierre and Eastern Railroad tracks snagged third place.

All three winners will receive a gift card to RedRossa - $25, $15 and $10 for first, second and third place, respectively.

The Capital Journal staff voted for the three winners, and it wasn't easy. Votes for the first, second and third place winners out of 11 photos were all over the board, with no one image having a clean sweep.

While the paper could only pick three to win, all 11 images are in this week's Dakota Life. And as most will find, it wasn't an easy call deciding which local shutterbugs had the best shots. But your chance to make the call on the next best photo is coming soon.

Another contest is around the corner for local photos, and this time the readers will pick the winner. Throughout summer, the Capital Journal will run submitted photos, and in August, readers will vote on who gets to take home a $100 gift card to the Ramkota Hotel.

So keep your cameras handy and when you see something neat, take a photo. Remember, there is no single category or subject for photos.
