A program which offers free snow removal service for elderly and disabled homeowners living in Pierre and Fort Pierre is again being offered to eligible individuals who wish to use the service this coming winter.

This marks the eighth year the Capital Area United Way has teamed with the Department of Corrections and the Women’s Prison to offer the Scoop-It! Snow Removal program in Pierre and Fort Pierre.

The Scoop-It! program utilizes inmates from the Women’s Prison to assist in removing snow from the sidewalks of elderly and disabled homeowners when measurable snow is received in the area. A uniformed corrections officer accompanies the inmate crew.

United Way Executive Director Gloria Hanson emphasized that homeowners need to re-register for the program even if they used the program last winter. They will not be automatically registered for this season.

To qualify for the Scoop-It! program, homeowners must be a resident of Pierre and Fort Pierre, must be elderly or disabled; have no one who can assist them with snow removal; and not have the financial means to pay someone for snow removal.

To learn more about the Scoop-It! program or to pre-register call the United Way office at 224-9229.
