After 62 years of doing what she loves, Mary Witte has decided to retire from fixing hair.

Witte graduated from Stewarts School of Hairstyling Beauty School in Sioux Falls in 1958, and started work in Sioux Falls. She then worked in Aberdeen for George Miller. After Miller bought a salon in Faulkton, Witte began working for him at the “Stylist” in Faulkton, until she and her family moved to Pierre in 1975. Her family was husband Pete and daughters Debby, Tina, Dawn and Tami.

Shortly after moving to Pierre, Witte was approached to fix hair at the Debonaire Salon of Beauty. Except for a short stint fixing hair at the JC Penney Salon in the Pierre Mall, Witte continued fixing hair at the Debonaire. According to Janine Huber, who came on in 1976, the salon is one place where the title hair dresser still hadn’t yet give way to cosmetologist.

Witte turned 81 years old this past September. Shortly after, though still during September, she decided maybe she was ready to retire and stay home.

According to her daughter Dawn Melius of Faulkton, Witte is blessed to be one of the few people who absolutely love what they do for a job. If you happen to have been one of her friends and customers, send her a card at 631 N. Poplar, Pierre, SD 57501.
