Local shutterbugs Matthew Edwards and Aileen Brunner provided a great selection of central South Dakota wildlife in this week's Community Art.
Brunner moved to Pierre in August and found a colorful ring-necked pheasant on a tree in her backyard on Jan. 16. She said she loves the blue feathers but noted they don't always show from other angles.
Luckily, she caught this one just right to show them — and the surprised look on its face.
Edwards, 7, said he found many different animals and birds during his Monday trip to Oahe Dam.
Among them, he found a pheasant taking a leisurely walk across the snow. The nonchalant look on its face showed Edwards did a good job sneaking up on the bird.
Edwards also displayed his sneaking-around abilities with a great shot showing a young deer through the brush. The blurred foreground did a good job framing the little deer as it inspected the field around it.
Edwards also found an eagle perched in a tree taking in the sights, with a brief head tilt to either nod off or keep an eye on the photographer below.
And in his last photo, Edwards caught the moon looking down on the area. The moon tends to be a difficult shot to catch when trying to keep it sharp and not blown out from the light. Luckily, Edwards prevented both as the lonely satellite lumbered across the blue sky.
If you have photos to share, send them to Editor Jorge Encinas at jencinas@capjournal.com. Include the who, what, where and when with your submissions.
The Capital Journal will publish the photos in Saturday's Dakota Life and online at capjournal.com.
The Capital Journal also selects one photo to feature in the weekly South Dakota Outdoors newsletter, published Fridays. You can sign up for the newsletter at capjournal.com under the "Outdoors" tab.
