The Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors football team played the Harrisburg Tigers in Harrisburg on Friday night in a battle of top ranked teams. The Tigers won 56-20.

The Tigers held a 21-13 lead after the first quarter. The two Govs scored a pair of touchdowns on passes from quarterback Lincoln Kienholz to wide receiver Jack Merkwan. The Tigers extended that lead to 42-20 at halftime. The third Govs score came on a touchdown pass from Kienholz to Cade Kaiser. The Govs were shutout in the second half. The Tigers scored a touchdown in both the third and fourth quarters, causing the clock to run in the last eight minutes.

Kienholz completed 21 of 33 passes, including three touchdown passes. Kaiser caught a team high nine passes, while Merkwan had 99 receiving yards and two touchdowns on two catches.

Harrisburg quarterback Jacob Knuth completed 12 of 17 passes for 277 yards and four touchdowns. Knuth also had two rushing touchdowns. Running back Gavin Ross had 203 rushing yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns.

The Govs (0-1) will host the Mitchell Kernels (1-0) at Hollister Field in Pierre on Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The Kernels defeated the Spearfish Spartans 28-7 in Mitchell on Friday.
