For the first time ever, Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors soccer played host to the Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers at the PILC Soccer Complex in Pierre on Saturday.

In the girls varsity game, Govs senior Avery Davis found the back of the net with 23 minutes to go in the first half to give the Govs the lead. The visiting Cavs outshot the Govs 7-6 in the entire game, but Govs senior goalkeeper Jenna Gehring held strong with three saves in her first game back since getting a red card against Brookings on Sept. 16. The Govs won 1-0.

In the boys varsity game, the game was scoreless until Sioux Falls Jefferson junior Byron Ochoa scored with 14:45 left. The Govs answered back with a goal on a penalty kick by junior Rylan Derry with 1:19 left in the game. Neither team was able to score, and the Govs came away with a 1-1 tie against the top team in Class AA boys soccer.

The Govs boys push their record to 6-4-2, while the Govs girls move to 8-3-1. They will next see action against the Huron Tigers boys (4-6-1) and girls (0-11) soccer teams in the regular season finale at the PILC Soccer Complex in Pierre on Tuesday. The boys game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. CT, while the girls game will start at 6 p.m. CT.
