The Pierre T.F. Riggs Governors soccer teams hosted the Yankton Bucks and Gazelles at the PILC Soccer Fields in Pierre on Tuesday.
The Govs girls and Gazelles finished with a 0-0 tie. Govs sophomore goalkeeper Jillian Hanson, playing in net after senior goalkeeper Jenna Gehring’s red card in a game against Brookings last week, had one save. Yankton senior Ashlyn Vogt had five saves.
In the boys game, the Bucks defeated the Govs, 5-0. The Bucks held a 2-0 lead at halftime after getting two goals early on from senior Zach Hebda. They added three goals late in the second half from senior Gage Becker, junior Alexander Nockels and sophomore Christian Schaeffer. The Bucks outshot the Govs, 19-11. Govs junior goalkeeper Carson Ahartz had eight saves.
The Govs girls (7-3-1) and boys (6-4-1) will host the Sioux Falls Jefferson Cavaliers girls (2-6-1) and boys (8-1) at the PILC Soccer Fields in Pierre on Saturday. These matchups will be the first matchups ever between the two schools. The girls varsity game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. CT, while the boys varsity game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. CT.
