For the first time, Giving South Dakota is holding a Day of Giving throughout the state today, Tuesday, Nov. 27. The goal of the day is for non-profits raise as much money and awareness as possible. More than 400 organizations are participating in the event, according to Giving South Dakota’s website.

Here are some local organizations that will be raising money until 11:59 p.m. tonight.

Pierre Area Referral Service

The Pierre Area Referral Service (PARS) is participating in the first Day of Giving. PARS, which manages the Pierre and Fort Pierre Food Pantry, Holiday Food Program, Emergency Assistance Program, BackPack Food Program and Information and Referral Services, can accept donations online at pierreareareferral.org.

Feeding South Dakota

Feeding South Dakota, which has commodity supplemental food programs (CSFP) at the Pierre Senior Center, PARS and a dropoff box for nutritional meals for the elderly in Fort Pierre (P.O. Box 215) will be taking donations as well. Feeding South Dakota will match donations dollar to dollar up to $20,000. Donations can be made at feedingsouthdakota.org/how-to-help/donate-funds.

Capital Area United Way

The Capital Area chapter of United Way is participating in Day of Giving by accepting donations at capareaunitedway.org/donate. In the spirit of Day of Giving, Fort Pierre community members Gary and Connie Girtner fully funded the Imagination Library in Hughes and Stanley Counties. The Imagination Library is a national effort that gives free books to over 1 million children each month across the U.S. According to United Way, nearly 450 children in Hughes and Stanley Counties are enrolled in the program.

South Dakota Discovery Center

The Discovery Center is raising money during Day of Giving. Donating to the Discovery Center allows the museum to fund camps and classes for local youth. Donations can be made at sd-discovery.org/Donate.

Hughes and Stanley Counties and more

Both Hughes and Stanley County are among the 66 counties participating in Day of Giving in South Dakota. On the South Dakota Gives website, a full list of counties and non-profits that are participating can be found, as well as links to where to donate. Non-profits that raise money will be entered into the South Dakota Prize Pool, where they will have the chance to win prize money from South Dakota Gives. The money has been raised through donations from businesses, foundations and individuals, per the South Dakota Gives website.
