Chief Justice David Gilbertson of the South Dakota Supreme Court swore in three Pierre City Commissioners, elected June 5, on Tuesday at their regular weekly meeting.

Before swearing in Jim Mehlhaff, Jamie Huizenga and Vona Johnson, Gilbertson  visited with Huizenga, left, and Jim Mehlhaff, center. Each was elected last month to a fourth three-year term. Commissioner Vona Johnson was elected last month to finish the third year of Mayor Steve Harding’s commissioner term which he left a year ago when he was elected mayor, then appointed Johnson to serve until the first election, which was June 5. The regular three-year election cycle for the five-member commission is two seats up for election to three-year terms each year except the third year, in which the mayor’s seat is up for election.

More often than not, a state circuit judge does the swearing in.

As he left after the ceremony, Gilbertson thanked the Commission, saying it's rare in his duties as the state's top judge to have a task where people are smiling when he begins and smiling when he's finished.
