There will be two seats on the Pierre school board up for election during the South Dakota primary on June 5.

The seats currently held by Dennis James and Randy Hartmann are scheduled to be opened for election this year, Darla Mayer, the Pierre school district’s business manager, said Monday during the board’s monthly regular meeting.

As has been the practice in the past, Mayer said, the school board election was scheduled to be held in conjunction with the city and county elections to boost turnout and share costs. The Pierre City Commission, Mayer said, had earlier approved the joint-election agreement. The school board unanimously approved the joint-election agreement.

Setting the election date for June 5 means the board will have to advertise vacancies on the board between Feb. 15 and March 1. Potential candidates and any incumbents will then have from March 1 to 5 p.m. on March 27 to circulate nominating petitions.
