What are you going to begin this year?
What will color 2012 for you?
Will it be worry and strife and anger?
How about beginning the year in a new way?
There’s a misguided belief many of us hold onto. We feel if we are worrying about something we are being responsible. If we aren’t worrying or stressing we don’t know how to react. So we cling to our worry like a toddler clings to her favorite blanket.
Worrying about something doesn’t do anything but mess you up. It doesn’t impress anyone. It doesn’t mean you are a caring person. It doesn’t mean anything except that you are letting worry and fear control you.
Quit worrying. There’s a better way to live.
Let yourself be happy this year. If you can’t imagine a life without worry, ask God to help you be free of it for the next hour. Then see you how you feel.
I hear you. You’re saying, But I have to worry.
No you don’t.
If we come right down to it, worry is a sin. Worry is a sin as much as ____________ is (fill in the blank with the sin you think is the worst).
Let go of the blanket this year. Drop it in the trash. Burn it. It’s strangling you. God has something so much better waiting for you.
But you can’t have both.
There’s a verse I absolutely love in Zechariah. Zechariah 4:10 (NLT) says, Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin.
Did you know believing is considered work by God? This is what you could begin this year.
Another favorite verse of mine is John 6:29. It says, This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent.
You can choose that work instead of worry.
You can do it, but you have to choose. It won’t just happen.
Something I do throughout the day is pray. Prayer is a powerful thing, probably the most powerful thing we can do.
So, as this is the first column of 2012 I am going to say a prayer for you, my readers. God knows everyone who will read this and He is faithful. He will answer this prayer in your life.
Lord, I ask that you bless my readers. Help them see You this year. Help them let go of all worry and choose to believe no matter what. Lord, I know there are times when believing is so hard. There will be times it feels foolish to believe. There will be times it goes beyond all logic. In those times, Lord, bolster their belief. In 2012, help them choose truth. Help them choose joy. Help them choose love, forgiveness and Your peace.
Lord, thank you for loving us. Help us all see that love. Help 2012 be the best year ever. In Your Holy Name, Lord, Amen.
