The no. 6 seed Sully Buttes Chargers took on the no. 3 seed Clark/Willow Lake Cyclones in the first round of the Class B State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen. The game was a rematch of last year’s State Championship Game, which the Chargers won 58-55.

The Chargers started out slow in the first half. They couldn’t get a single shot to fall, and were left scoreless until junior guard Grant Johnson scored a bucket with 5:29 to go in the first half. The Cyclones, who started the game on a 19-0 run, kept that momentum. They went into halftime up 25-6. The Cyclones outscored the Chargers the rest of the way. They wouldn’t allow the Chargers to get within 18 points of their lead. The Cyclones won 58-26.

The Cyclones shot 50 percent from both the field and from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Chargers 31-21 and had better passing (8-5 assist advantage). The Cyclones had nine turnovers, while the Chargers had 14. The Chargers shot 25 percent from the field, and 17 percent from three. The Chargers had a better free throw percentage than the Cyclones (75-62), but neither team got to the line very much, with a grand total of 12 free throws attempted between the two teams.

The Cyclones were led by senior center Micah Burke, who had 13 points and ten rebounds. His brother, junior forward Stone Burke, had ten points and nine rebounds. Senior guards Jacob Prouty and Grayson Florey each had nine points. The Chargers were led by junior guards Nick Wittler and Grant Johnson, who each had six points. Senior forward Cam Ogle had five points. 

The Class B Boys Tournament was full of upsets on Thursday. The Cyclones were the only higher seed to advance into the semifinals. The day started with No. 8 seed Viborg-Hurley defeating No. 1 seed White River 68-61. No. 5 seed DeSmet defeated No. 4 seed Jones County 60-55. No. 7 seed Bridgewater-Emery defeated No. 2 seed Timber Lake 55-54 after Timber Lake came back from being down 19 points.

The Chargers will play the Timber Lake Panthers on Friday afternoon. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:45 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on Friday’s game will be a rematch from a game on January 15 in Onida. The Chargers defeated the Panthers 67-57 in overtime.
