Harrisburg, SD — The Capital City Crushers U12 baseball team opened the 2019 season with a championship win at the Harrisburg Invitational on Saturday. The Crushers defeated the Dell Rapids Quarriers, Harrisburg Wildcats and West Lyons Wildcats in the one-day tournament.
In the first-round game, the Crushers faced the Quarriers. The Crushers got things started when Carson Stoeser scored on a Weston Northrup RBI double. Charlie Simpson drove in JJ Bucholz to push the Crushers’ lead to 2-0. In the fourth inning, the Crushers scored five runs, including one off of a home run by George Stalley. The Crushers won 7-1. Andrew Campea was the winning pitcher. He allowed zero runs in three innings.
The Crushers’ bats were hot against the Harrisburg Wildcats. Campea and Trevor Rounds crossed the plate in the first inning to give the Crushers a 2-0 lead. RBIs by Stalley and Rounds in the second inning doubled the Crushers’ lead. Stalley hit a grand slam home run in the third inning that scored Lincoln Houska, Northrup and Campea. That home run pushed the lead to 9-0. The Crushers added three more runs to make the final score 12-0. Colton Brady was the winning pitcher in the game. Stalley pitched in relief.
In the championship game, the West Lyons Wildcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead in their first at bat. Rounds responded with a solo home run to square the game back up, and the Crushers never looked back. RBIs in the third inning by Stoeser, Ridge Leimbach and Northrup brought in four runs in the third inning. Brady scored on an RBI by Leimbach in the fifth inning to make the final score 6-1. Campea was the starting pitcher for the championship game. Stalley and Brady pitched in relief to close out the win.
The Crushers will next compete in the Madison Early Bird Tournament next Saturday.
