The Expedition League will welcome a new team to the league in 2020: the Rapid City Jackalopes.
The Jackalopes announced their name, logo and colors in a news release sent to the Capital Journal on Wednesday afternoon. The colors are cardinal red, dark blue, teal and gray.
When coming up with the name, Jackalopes owner Kevin Bybee said that he wanted something the team could have fun with.
“We are all about quality family fun, and this branding gives us so much to work with,” Bybee said. “Not many things say Western South Dakota quite like a jackalope. We will have a ton of fun with this mascot at the ballpark every night.”
Bybee, along with his wife Heidi, also own the Spearfish Sasquatch, also of the Expedition League. While it hasn’t been confirmed, Bybee said the Jackalopes and Sasquatch look forward to competing for the Beef Cup against East River teams in the Pierre Trappers and Hub City Hotshots out of Aberdeen.
Pending approval by the City of Rapid City, the Jackalopes will play their home games at McKeague Field in Rapid City, with their first home games tentatively scheduled to start in May 2020. McKeague Field, which is where the Pierre spring baseball team played against Douglas and Rapid City Stevens earlier this season, will need some renovations in order for the Jackalopes to play there. The Expedition League and the Jackalopes have been granted permission by the city to pursue naming rights for the stadium. The name of McKeague Field will be included with the new name of the stadium.
Pierre Trappers general manager Jackson Bruce told the Capital Journal he is excited to have another South Dakota team in the Expedition League.
“It’s another short bus trip for us,” Bruce said. “It’s a good place in South Dakota to have a team, and they’ve got some great people running it.”
There will be 11 teams in the Expedition League with the inclusion of the Jackalopes.
